The film is composed by eight parts, connected by a single narrative. It tells a story of the workers of Petrograd, who have recently passed through a bloody revolution. As winners, they are now determined to build their new future. A group of young people goes to the distant Altai, in order to establish there the likeness of the first collective farm, according to communist ideals. The film is a screen adaptation of a poem by Olga Bergholz about the heroism of the first revolutionaries.

Evgeny Schiffers was born in 1934, in Moscow. He was a theater and film director in, at first, Saint Petersburg and then Moscow. His work had its flourishment during the 60s, staging six plays between 1963 and 1966. Besides, he was a writer and religious philosopher.
