"Seven Songs for Malcolm X" is a British documentary film about the life of Malcolm X, the influential civil rights activist who was assassinated in 1965. It collects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, legacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. The film looks for the meaning behind the resurgence of interest in the man whose X always stood for the unknown. John Akomfrah was born in 1957 in London, England. He is a director and
writer, known for Handsworth Songs (1986), Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993), The Last Angel of History (1996) and the installations The Unfinished Conversation (2013, Tate Modern) & Vertigo Sea (2015, Venice Biennale).
Akomfrah is best known for his work with the London-based media workshop Black Audio Film Collective, which he co-founded in 1982 with the objectives of addressing issues of Black British identity and developing media forms appropriate to this subject matter.
