One day, Laurentiu, the brother of a childhood friend of director Corneliu Porumboiu, decided to change the rules of football and strived unsuccessfully to promote the new sport. This prompted the director to want to know more about football: after all his father played football and hoped to one day become a professional player. What made Laurentiu want to break the rules? Was it not an attempt to point out how important freedom is?

Corneliu Porumboiu (Vaslui, 1975) is a prominent name in the Romanian contemporary cinema landscape. After winning the Caméra d’Or with 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006), his following films confirmed his talent as a director and a storyteller. Marked by a certain realistic will and a strong political sense, Porumboiu’s cinema manages to explore Romania’s historical memory in a comical, nonsensical way.
