Born in Salvador, in 1968, Sérgio Machado is a Brazilian director, screenwriter and journalist. He graduated in journalism and, before going on to direct his own features, he was assistant director for Walter Salles in films like Central Station (1998), Midnight (1998) and Shredded April (2001). He debuted as a director with the documentary At the Edge of the Earth in 2001, which took him to several festivals. In 2005, he released Lower City, earning him an award at Cannes and applauded at several International festivals. Since then, he directed, among other films, The Violin Teacher (2015), screened at the Locarno Film Festival.
