A deceptively simple set-up: the director and his father Adrian watch a 1988 football match which Adrian refereed, their commentary accompanying the television images in real time. A Bucharest derby between the country’s leading teams, Dinamo and Steaua, taking place in heavy snow, one year before the revolution that toppled Nicolae Ceaușescu. Throught its comentary, The Second Game tackles how humans relate to the past and to their family.

Corneliu Porumboiu (Vaslui, 1975) is a prominent name in the Romanian contemporary cinema landscape. After winning the Caméra d’Or with 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006), his following films confirmed his talent as a director and a storyteller. Marked by a certain realistic will and a strong political sense, Porumboiu’s cinema manages to explore Romania’s historical memory in a comical, nonsensical way.
