Haiti, 1962. A man is brought back from the dead to work in the callous world of sugar cane plantations. Fifty-five years later, a Haitian-descent teenage girl tells her friends about her family secret, oblivious to the heavy consequences of this act. A contemporary horror film drawing from the very concrete reality of French colonialism in Haiti, its narrative acts as a trigger to reflect on racism, imperialism and cultural memory.

Bertrand Bonello (Nice, 1968) lives between Paris and Montréal. His first feature film, Something Organic (1998), was presented at the Panorama Section of the Berlin Film Festival. The Pornographer (2001), his second feature starring Jean-Pierre Léaud, was selected for the International Critics’ Week at Cannes Film Festival and won a FIPRESCI prize. The director imposed his singular voice and style with Tiresia (2003), which screened at the main competition in Cannes. In 2005 he returned to Cannes with a short, Cindy: the Doll is Mine. His feature On War (2008), for which he also composed the soundtrack, was selected to screening during the Directors’ Fortnight at Locarno Film Festival. Bonello was a guest at LEFFEST in 2011 with House of Tolerance, in 2012 with Ingrid Caven: Music and
Voice, in 2014 with Saint Laurent opening the festival, and in 2016, when Nocturama was part of the official
competition.
