A classic in British experimental and feminist cinema. With Louise as only protagonist, Riddles of the Sphinx crafts an alternative representation of the woman on film in the attempt of breaking down the conventional patriarchal narrative that views the female figure as a mere object of desire. Drawing on film theorist Laura Mulvey’s groundbreaking 1975 essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, the film makes use of an avant-garde fragmentary style so as to break rules, defy the norm and introduce a revolutionary outlook on the domestic and professional spaces that frame the female body.
