Sharad wants to follow his father's footsteps and dedicate himself to the century-old traditions of Indian classical music. Under the teachings of a strict master, he studies the art of intonation and the different melodic variations of the craft. However, living in the midst of a rapidly-changing Mumbai that puts classical techniques in peril as new ways replace the old, Sharad finds himself facing a dream unfit for the reality unfolding in front of him. Director Chaitanya Tamhane’s second feature, The Disciple is a melodious and poetic reflection about the confrontation between tradition and modernity, between the need to adapt and the will to preserve.

Chaitanya Tamhane
Born in 1987 in Mumbai, Chaitanya Tamhane is one of the most promising young Indian directors. After studying English Literature, he became actively involved in theater and cinema from 2004 onwards. In 2011, he directed his first short-film Six Strands, about a woman who produces what is said to be the most elusive and expensive tea in the world. His first feature Court (2014), a protest film that denounces the Indian legal system, saw its premiere taking place at the Venice Film Festival, where it also won the award for Best Film in the Horizons category. His second feature, The Disciple, won the Best Screenplay Award and the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize in Venice, and it was selected to compete at LEFFEST’20.
