In 1981, Bobby Sands, a 27 year old man from the Irish Republican Army detained in Northern Ireland’s Maze Prison, began a hunger strike to protest the British government’s refusal to recognize captured members of the IRA as political prisoners. As McQueen reveals Bobby’s last living days in prison, we witness what a man is willing to endure to make his voice heard.
Award-winner at the Venice and Cannes Films Festivals and at the BAFTAS, Hunger is a unique and complex work on human principle: “In Hunger there is no simplistic notion of hero or martyr or victim. My intention is to provoke debate in the audience, to challenge our own morality through film”, said Steve McQueen about this movie.
