The Cape Town-born director Oliver Hermanus holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film, Media and Visual Studies. After graduating, he worked as a press photographer with a national news agency in South Africa. In 2006 he completed a Masters degree from the London Film School and his graduation film Shirley Adams premiered in competition at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2009. That same year Oliver was selected to attend the 19th session of the Cannes Film Festivals Cinéfondation in Paris. His third feature, The Endless River (2015), premiered in Competition at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, becoming the first ever South African film to be invited to the main competition.
