Through a Glass Darkly

A film by Ingmar Bergman

Back
Ingmar Bergman may be considered as the director who explored, with the greatest subtlety and depth, the feeling of guilt. Therefore, LEFFEST opens the thematic cycle “Am I Guilty?” with one of his classics.

One of Bergman's most profound films about family and human relationships, Through a Glass Darkly is structured as a three-act play, drawing on the director's own experiences and relationships. It was received with great affection by critics worldwide and earned Sweden the Oscar for Best Foreign Film at the 1962 ceremony.

Karin (Harriet Andersson) has just come out of a psychiatric hospital. Travels to the family's vacation home to reconnect with her husband, father, and brother. Then, as her mental health deteriorates, she begins to distance herself from reality, believing that she is being visited by God.
