Ujamii Uhuru Schule Community Freedom School

A film by Don Amis

Back
With the virtues of the three Rs in mind — Respect, Righteousness and Revolution — the curriculum of the school also accentuates the importance of cultural values and self-defense. The head-master mentions, for instance, how essential it is to pursue an historical revisionism in favor of African richness as opposed to a white pasteurized history.

Shot in high contrast to emulate the color spectrum of the Pan-African flag, the short documentary is punctuated with African chants, syncopated drums and poignant narration by the school’s faculty.

Director

Don Amis

Don Ami is a documentary filmmaker born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After serving in the Air Force, he joined his sister in Los Angeles and enrolled at UCLA in 1970, through an initiative to recruit talented minority students. After obtaining his B.A., Amis earned his M.F.A. at the university in 1983.

He is one of the filmmakers associated to the L.A. Rebellion movement, also known as ‘Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers’: a generation of filmmakers from the 60s to the 80s of UCLA, creators of a revolutionary Black Cinema diverging from Hollywood conventions and attentive to the real african-american lived experiences. He directed Ujamii Uhuru Schule Community Freedom School (1974), and Festival of Mask (1982); respectively, about a short documentary about an Afrocentric primary school in South Central, Los Angeles, and a portrayal of the ethnic and racial diversity of Los Angeles through the Craft and Folk Art Museum’s annual festival.

Amis later returned to Philadelphia, where he worked on documentaries for the Commonwealth Media Service. There, he has covered political events for the Governor, made training films and public safety projects, and handled satellite feeds for WHYY-TV (Public Television) Philadelphia.
