Younger son of the director and Larissa Pavlovna, Andrei Andreievich is the chairman of the
Florence- and Paris- based Andrei Tarkovsky International Institute, which
safeguards the legacy and testimony of the Russian filmmaker. His relationship
with his father was marked by a five-year period of separation due to the
Soviet authorities' refusal to grant him the necessary permit to leave Moscow
to join his parents, in self-imposed exile in Europe. During this separation
and already with terminal cancer, Andrei Tarkovsky dedicated his last
film, The Sacrifice, to Andriusha, as a declaration of his hope and faith in the future. The USSR finally gave Andriusha the visa he needed and
he was able to visit his father in hospital shortly before his death. Their
embrace marks the beginning of Chris Marker's One day in the life of
Andrei Arsenevich."
